Why hire a fight choreographer?

Fight Direction has become an integral part of theatre in general. Whether it be classics such as Shakespeare or modern plays such as She Kills Monsters, having good, safe fight choreography is an important element that will captivate your audience. However, having poor, unsafe choreography will cause an audience to become uncomfortable and can detract from the quality of your show. Besides, hiring a fight choreographer is cheaper than hiring a lawyer or doctor.

One of our actors played Benvolio in college and remembers some of their old choreography. Why can’t we just use them to choreograph our show?

I follow that up with, “Do you see your actors as expendable?” I certainly hope not! I’ve heard way too many horror stories of people with minimal stage combat training being asked to choreograph sword fights, knife fights, etc. I can speak from experience that I once performed a knife fight using single sword techniques and have scars to show for it. I’ve seen near concussions occur due to poor choreography.
Bringing in a well-trained seasoned fight choreographer is the difference between a safe working environment for your actors and unneeded risk of injury.

OK. Well, I do I know some reputable fight choreographers, what makes BattleKat any different?

This is a great question as there are some incredible fight choreographers working in Tennessee. What makes BattleKat different is not only making your productions look awesome, but also creating a safe, welcoming environment for your actors. We have a firm belief that no actor should be asked to perform choreography they don’t feel 100% comfortable with performing. We also have an understanding that directors have a vision for their shows and BattleKat loves collaborating with directors to ensure that their vision is realized.

All of this sounds pretty good so far. I’d like to hire you but our budget is pretty small. Do you work for free?

No. Artists deserve to be paid. The good news is that we do work on a sliding scale if needed. Check out our “HIRE US” page to get a quote.
